Tell us a little about Richmond Security – what’s the primary goal you’re trying to accomplish?
The overriding vision to grow the business was to increase our commercial security division, by adding access control, video surveillance and intrusion alarm products and services. Since that change about 10 years ago, the company has established a market presence, not only as a locksmith company, but also now as a leader in the electronics access control market.
Our primary goal is always evolving. However, Richmond Security’s consistently endeavors to be an all-in-one security system and service provider to its commercial clients, working to seamlessly integrate existing security technology with new products. Other security providers tend to excel in just one of the primary security business sectors (i.e. alarms) and believe their solution is all that is needed for total security.
Tell me how you got involved with your company:
Richmond Security opened in 1976 and the business existed as a locksmith and safe company for many years. I purchased the company in 2007. My industry experience spanned from a manufacturer’s representative with Medeco Security Lock, to end user sales specialist for Best Access Systems (now Stanley Security Solutions), to working for HCI Craftsman, a contract hardware company specializing in specification writing for construction projects with doors, frames and hardware.
Richmond Security was my client when I was a manufacturer’s representative at Medeco Security Locks. I saw the electronic access control market segment in its infancy and realized it held enormous potential for growth.
Describe a day in the life of Richmond Security:
That’s a tough one. The essence of our day is getting the service technicians onto job sites whether they working on extended projects for the electronic access control division or a multitude of daily installations and service on the mechanical locksmith side. There are a lot of moving parts every day and, as they say, we must continue to strive to be “a well-oiled machine”.
What is one of Richmond Security’s biggest challenges?
Our challenges are many but they are challenges any business would like to have. At this time, they include on the personnel side, finding and hiring experienced technicians to fill out our team as our business continues to grow.
From the business side, it is continually managing our growth. We work to respect the importance of cash flow, profitability and the ever looming responsibility to pay taxes. Although politicians continue to tout that small businesses are the “backbone of the American economy”, the tax burden remains great.
What might our readers be surprised to learn about Richmond Security?
In 2016, Richmond Security celebrated our 40th year in business. Throughout those years, about half of our employees have been with the company between ten (10) and forty (40) years.
Tell us a recent success story:
In 2016 we outgrew our previous facility and had to move into a new complex that has tripled our office and warehouse space. We were able to gut the existing space in the new facility, and built it out to our specifications. We now have 15 occupied offices, a mobile workspace for our techs, a showroom for some of our security products including safes, a conference room, and a kitchen/breakroom to name just a few of the upgrades. We also have a separate warehouse which is in the same complex as our our primary offices and showroom.
What’s next for your company?
I think what’s next has happened. We decided to take the next step to grow our business. That included the relocation of our facility, a major software upgrade that has added a complex inventory control system, and additional tech and administrative staff, all to allow us to keep up with the demands that accompany a growing business.
