Here at Helm & Hue, we love working with our amazing clients! Whether they’re a solo entrepreneur or a global company, our clients are all making an impact in their communities. We’ve developed this series as a way of helping them expand their reach and spread the word about how they are making a difference.
This month’s featured Client Spotlight is People Places, Inc, a nonprofit agency providing foster care, adoption, and community-based services. We talked with Kindall A. Stevenson, their Marketing, Advertising & Recruitment Specialist about the organization’s who, what and why. Take it away Kindall!
Tell us a little about People Places – what’s the primary goal you’re trying to accomplish?
On any given day, there are nearly 428,000 children in foster care in the United States and over 5,000 of these children reside in Virginia. They live in our communities and are in desperate need of stable foster homes. We have been nurturing relationships since 1973, and are dedicated to providing therapeutic services, which build safe and lasting bonds for foster children and families.
Tell me how you got involved with your organization.
I was looking for an organization, in the Charlottesville area, whose mission was to help children. I found People Places on the Center for Nonprofit Excellence’s website and fell in love with the agency. Right then, I had to apply to become their Marketing Specialist.
Describe a day in the life of People Places…
Every day, we work to connect children with families that care and can build meaningful relationships. People Places provides an array of foster care, adoption, and community-based services and programs. Our staff works closely with foster families throughout their journey and small caseloads allow us to provide individualized support and 24/7 on-call, crisis support.
What is one of the organization’s biggest challenges?
Our biggest challenge is that we need more families! There are thousands of children, in foster care every day. They need safe spaces to go home to at night, with foster parents who are loving, supportive, and understanding. We ALWAYS need more of these parents, with a heart to serve, who are willing to care for children and sibling groups of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences.
What might our readers be surprised to learn about your organization?
There is no cost associated with becoming a certified foster/adoptive parent and you do not have to be married! We certify single, married, and co-habitating individuals and couples of all compositions.
Tell us a recent success story.
Recently, an eight-year-old girl was reunited with her relatives after more than a year in foster care. After having suffered so many losses in her young life, she is finally experiencing permanency and doesn’t have to wonder each day where she will be next. The best part is that her foster parents are going to remain in contact and will continue as advocates and role models for her and her family.
What’s next for People Places?
We are actively working to strengthen our community partnerships and better our agency’s support of families and children by working towards national accreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA).
